Abstract
A review of the knowledge pertinent to the use of deep wells for the subsurface injection of liquid waste has been carried out to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility and desirability of this method and to outline existing research needs. This review has shown that the deep-well injection of liquid waste is technically feasible in many areas of the country and, if properly planned and implemented, is not likely to be harmful to natural resources. While most of the technical knowledge and experience necessary to carry out the deep-well injection of liquid waste is presently available, further investigation is necessary to solve specific problems that remain as barriers to the safe, efficient, and economic use of this method.
