Abstract
National Eutrophication Survey (NES) data for 473 non-point type drainage areas in the eastern United States were studied for relationships between drainage area characteristics (particularly land use) and nutrient levels in streams. Both the total and inorganic forms of phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations and loads in streams were considered. The objectives were to (1) investigate these relationships, as they were evidenced by the NES data and (2) develop a means for estimating stream nutrient levels from knowledge of 'macro' drainage area characteristics.
