Abstract |
Pollution sources generated during the market preparation of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and shell eggs were assessed. From the over one hundred different fruits and vegetables that are grown commercially in the United States, ten of the largest volume crops were selected for this study representing over 70 percent of the total volume. In addition, because of the specificity of their handling requirements, two nut crops, two species of fresh fish and fresh eggs were also included in this study. The method of approach used in conducting the study was to prepare descriptions on unit operations for each crop and to identify the extent of water usage, sources of effluent and emission from each step from harvest to shipment to market. |
