As part of our mission to communicate environmental regulatory responsibilities to business and industry, EPA's Chemical, Commercial Services and Municipal Division (CCSMD) in the Office of Compliance (OC) has prepared the Multimedia Environmental Compliance Guide for Food Processors -- an overview of the major environmental statues and regulations administered by EPA -- that may affect food processors. This overview offers a first step in understanding federal environmental requirements affecting the manufacturing operations and selected ancillary operations of food processors, as defined by former Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 20. The target audience for the guide is the plant-level manager and/or staff responsible for environmental compliance at a facility. Others who may find value in this guide include the following: environmental managers at the corporate level; state and local compliance assistance programs; trade associations; and environmental consultants to the industry. Federal, state, and local regulators and/or compliance inspectors may also find this guide useful in offering a broad perspective on U.S. EPA's requirements and the food processing industry.
