Abstract
In 1988, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) was amended to strengthen EPA's pesticide regulatory authority and responsibilities regarding the reregistration of pesticides. These amendments mandated an accelerated reregistration scheme, to be carried out in five phases concluding in the late 1990s. The thrust of the phased approach is to generate a substantially complete scientific data base for each pesticide product before it is evaluated by the Agency and reregistered. The document provides a general overview of the provisions, process and status of the reregistration program.
