Abstract |
This research program was initiated to evaluate possible environmental contamination by polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). The program included sampling and analytical method development and the collection and analysis of field samples. A glass fiber filter and two precleaned polyurethane foam plugs in tandem were used for PCN collection. Recovery of the PCNs from the foam and filter was accomplished by triple extraction with toluene. The concentrated extract was chromatographed on a silica gel column and the final volume reduced to 2 ml in a Kuderna-Danish apparatus. Samples were analyzed by gas chromatograph/quadrupole mass spectrometer/computer. The instrument was operated in the multiple ion detection mode which permitted the detection of < 50 pg of a PCN isomer (approximately 0.3 ng/cu m in air). The presence of PCNs was confirmed from full scan mass spectra or by monitoring the chlorine isotope ratio. Air, water, soil, sediment and biota were collected from sites near a PCN manufacturer, and six potential users. PCNs were found at all sites sampled although appreciable quantities were found at only three sites, near the manufacturer and two possible users. |
