Abstract
A primary eye irritation study in New Zealand white rabbits (3/sex/group) in which animals received 100 mg of pentaerythriol tetrabenzoate in the cupped conjunctival sac of the right eye which remained unwashed for 24 hours indicated the test material was mildly irritating (with group average scores of 12.9 or less). A primary skin irritation study with similar groups in which 500 mg of test material was applied under cover to clipped, abraded skin yielded a score of 0.0, indicating the substance is non-irritating under these conditions. Acute dermal toxicity to rabbits was tested by application of 20,000 mg/kg of test material under cover to clipped abraded and unabraded skin and monitored from 24 hours to 14 days. No observable pharmacotoxic signs or dermal irritation were seen. An acute oral toxicity test with Sprague-Dawley rats (5/sex/group) in which test material was administered at 5000 mg/kg by gavage as a suspension in corn oil at a volume of 10 ml/kg led to no mortalities. Hypoactivity was the only observable pharmacotoxic sign. Document includes: USEPA Status Report: Benzoflex S-552 with Attachments and Cover Letter dated 01/22/79.
