Abstract
The problem of photochemical oxidants in the ambient air of the United States is examined with respect to its nature, magnitude, and present day control. Concentration levels of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and other photochemically formed pollutants are surveyed, and their effects on human health, vegetation, and materials, as well as their economic impacts, are discussed. Oxidant precursors, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides are reviewed with regard to ambient concentrations and emission rates and in terms of chemical reactions that produce oxidants. Oxidant control efforts are discussed with specific emphasis placed on scientific approaches, emission control methods, costs of control, and control legislation.
