Abstract
A predictive model and test method were developed for determining the chemical resistance of protective polymeric gloves exposed to liquid organic chemicals. The prediction of permeation through protective gloves by solvents was based on theories of the solution thermodynamics of polymer/solvent systems and the diffusion of solvents in polymers. These models and test methods were further developed to estimate the solubility, S, and the diffusion coefficient, D for a solvent in a glove polymer. Given S and D, the permeation of a glove by a solvent can be predicted for various exposure conditions using analytical or numerical solutions to Fick's Laws. The model developed for estimating solubility is based on group-contribution methods for predicting phase equilibria, while that for estimating diffusion coefficients versus concentration is based on free-volume theory. The predictive test method developed is a liquid-immersion/desorption method that provides estimates of S and D.
