Abstract |
A 5-year investigation of the effects of floodplain gravel mining on the physical and biological characteristics of river systems in arctic and subarctic Alaska is described. Twenty-five sites were studied within four geographic regions. The sites were selected such that within each of the regions the group of sites exhibited a wide range of river and mining characteristics. The field data collection program covered the major disciplines of hydrology/hydraulics, aquatic biology, water quality, and terrestrial biology. In addition, geotechnical engineering, and aesthatics site reviews were conducted. |
