Abstract |
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Region 4 South Florida Ecosystem Assessment Project is an innovative, long-term research, monitoring, and assessment project. Its ultimate goal is to inject sound scientific information into management decisions on the Everglades ecosystem and its restoration. The South Florida Ecosystem Assessment Project has a five-fold purpose: (1) Contribute to the South Florida Everglades Restoration Program by monitoring the condition and trends in the Everglades ecosystem. (2) Assess the effects and potential risks due to mercury contamination in the South Florida ecosystem, specifically on fish, wading birds, and other biota, as part of the South Florida Mercury Science Program. (3) Assess the effects and potential risks from other environmental stresses such as hydropattern modification, habitat alteration, phosphorus loading, and eutrophication on the Everglades ecosystem. (4) Improve monitoring design and ecological assessments for evaluating the relative risks of environmental stressors acting on the Everglades ecosystem. (5) Provide scientifically credible information on a regular basis that contributes to management decisions on Everglades restoration issues. |
