Abstract
A method for the measurement of ambient levels of ethylene dichloride (EDC) was developed and field tested. A 24-hour integrated sample is taken with an activated charcoal tube, followed by desorption of the EDC with carbon disulfide. The carbon disulfide solution is then analyzed for EDC by separation on a gas chromatograph and detection with a mass spectrometer. Development of the method included the following area steps: Selection of gas chromatographic conditions and a detection system for separation and quantification of EDC; Determination of adsorption capacity of the charcoal tube for EDC; Evaluation of the desorption of EDC from adsorbents under dry and wet conditions; Evaluation of optimum sampling rates; Determination of total method efficiency; and, Evaluation of the method under field conditions by use of data from field studies.
