Abstract |
The study reports on the technical and economic feasibility of a process for hydrolyzing the cellulosic content of refuse to sugar. The sugar, in turn, is fermented to produce ethanol. The processes reported on are: (1) the bench-scale kinetics of acid hydrolysis of paper in a batch reactor and a continuous flow isothermal plug reactor; (2) the economic analysis of the acid hydrolysis and; (3) the fermentation of sugar obtained from the hydrolysis of refuse. Under proper circumstances, converting the cellulose in refuse to sugar or ethanol is believed economically feasible. (Author) |
