Abstract
Biochemical and soil microbiology studies indicate that numerous mechanisms exists for the dehalogenation of both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Tests described in this paper demonstrate that enzymatic systems are capable of dehalogenation. The report does not answer the question of the biodegradability of halogenated hydrocarbons, but illustrates the need for more information in order to identify compounds that are likely to undergo enzymatic cleavage of the carbon-halogen bond.
