Abstract
p,p'-DDT was administered po in peanut oil to 5 groups of 6 squirrel monkeys at doses of 50, 5, 0.5, 0.05, and 0 mg/kg/day. Blood samples were taken weekly from each animal; several hematologic parameters were determined, and plasma amylase, aldolase, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, and isocitric dehydrogenase were measured. Two monkeys from each group were killed after 2, 4, and 6 mo and in vitro liver homogenate enzyme activity was measured using p-nitroanisole and ethyl p-nitrophenyl phenylphosphonothioate as substrates. No discernible effects on hematologic values or plasma enzyme levels were observed. The stimulation of the 2 liver homogenate mixed-function oxidases was maximal after 2 mo treatment. There were no significant differences in the levels of homogenate enzyme activity at the 3 sacrifice periods. The monkeys given 50 mg/kg/day all died within 14 wk of starting treatment; deaths did not occur at the other doses.
