Abstract
The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), as amended in 1996, requires the EPA to publish a list of contaminants (referred to as the Contaminant Candidate List, or CCL) to assist in priority-setting efforts. The contaminants included on the CCL were not subject to any current or proposed National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWR), were known or anticipated to occur in public water systems, were known or suspected to adversely affect public health, and therefore may require regulation under SDWA. The first Drinking Water CCL was published on March 2, 1998 (USEPA, 1998; 63 FR 10273), and a new CCL must be published every five years thereafter. This document presents scientific data and summaries of technical information prepared for, and used in, the Environmental Protection Agencys (EPA) regulatory determination for sulfate. Information regarding sulfates physical and chemical properties, environmental fate, occurrence and exposure, and health effects is included. Analytical methods and treatment technologies are also discussed. Furthermore, the regulatory determination process is described to provide the rationale for the decision.
