Abstract
Chapter One discusses economic, legal, and environmental factors that motivate a reduction in sludge production. Chapter Two reviews the North Carolina RCRA regulations concerning disposal and recycle of sludges. Chapter Three provides case studies and descriptive data on process changes that North Carolina electroplaters have made which have reduced their treating and recovery load including dragout reduction, innovative rinsing processes and personnel training. Chapter Four uses case studies to look at in-plant installations of evaporators, ion exchangers, and electrolytic cells for recycle and recovery of metals. Chapter Five provides examples of external recycle (sale) of electroplating solutions and sludges. The remainder of the text describes delisting and solidification of sludges, and research and progress on metal recovery plants.
