Abstract
The decision document presents the Operable Unit Four Remedial Action for the National Starch & Chemical Company Superfund Site in Salisbury, North Carolina. This Operable Unit, Operable Unit No. 4, is a contingency remedy initially relying on natural degradation processes to reduce the level of contaminants in the soil. In the event that natural degradation fails to result in a significant reduction in soil concentrations within two years of the signing of this Record of Decision, the contingency remedy will be implemented. The contingency remedy involves the installation of a soil vapor extraction system with an emissions control technology such as fume incineration or activated carbon filtration or a combination of both to control air stream discharged to the atmosphere.
