Abstract
The Lipari Landfill site is a municipal and industrial waste landfill in Mantua Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey. The landfill consists of an 'onsite' and an 'offsite' portion. The remedial action addresses the offsite portion of the site which is the area outside of the encapsulation system consisting of agricultural and residential areas that include several lakes, streams, and parks. Offsite investigations indicate that lakes, streams, and marshland in the area surrounding the site has been impacted by contaminant migration from the landfill. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water, surface water, sediments, soil and air are VOCs including benzene, toluene, and xylene, and metals including arsenic, chromium, and lead. The selected remedial action for the offsite areas includes: collection of the contaminated ground water/leachate, followed by onsite treatment and discharge to POTW; excavation of contaminated marsh soil, and dredging and dewatering contaminated sediments, followed by thermal treatment and offsite disposal as nonhazardous material; integration of offsite sampling with the onsite monitoring plan being developed to monitor the effectiveness of the onsite flushing action; and temporary remedial measures in the surrounding marshland, if necessary, to mitigate volatile emissions from leachate seepage areas.
