Abstract
The report gives results of work dealing with the problem of extracting temperature, species concentration, and velocity data from flames. A literature review was conducted to determine the state-of-the-art for making the following measurements in a particulate-laden flame environment: flame temperature--1100 to 2500C; stable chemical species--NO, H2, O2, CO, SO2, CO2, N2, NO2, and Ar: unstable chemical species--O, N, OH, H, and other flame intermediates: and velocity--magnitude and direction. Based on results of the literature review, three separate probes were designed and fabricated to make these measurements. In order to measure the unstable species and also to provide a calibration reference for the stables species and temperature, a molecular beam mass spectrometer equipped with a time-of-flight chopper was used.
