Abstract
A study to investigate the relation between geomorphology and riparian vegetation on Lake creek and clear Creek, two tributaries of the Arkansas river in Colorado, was conducted from June 3, 1992, to April, 1996. The purpose of the study was to relate geomorphic condition to riparian vegetation. Both tributaries primarily are located in the subalpine zone, and drain watersheds of approximately 200 km3. The effect of flow augmentation on the riparian vegetation also is a subject of this study. The six geomorphic variables recorded were valley width, valley gradient, presence of side drainages, elevation, channel pattern, and drainage are above the site. The biogeomorphic variable measured was presence of beaver ponds. The three riparian vegetation variables recorded were riparian zone width, vegetation community type, and vegetation cover. Statistical tests were employed to determine if the geomorphic variables were related to riparian vegetation characteristics.
