Abstract | The development and testing of a new concept for oil identification this past year made possible the successful application of gas chromatography to the analysis and identification of asphalts. Through the use of electron capture detection-gas chromatography, the passively labeled perfluorobenzyl thioethers and ethers which are derivatives of weak acids present in trace amounts in discharged heavier petroleum products were separated, and the resulting chromatograms served as fingerprints for identification.
