Abstract
The report, updating the status of dry SO2 control systems for coal-fired utility and industrial boilers in the U.S. through the Fall of 1982, is based on current and recent research, research and development, and commercial activities. Systems addressed include: (1) spray dryer/fabric filter or electrostatic precipitator (ESP), (2) dry injection of alkali into flue gas followed by collection of particulates, (3) combustion of coal/alkali mixtures, and (4) electron-beam (E-beam) irradiation followed by particulate matter collection. Systems (1) and (2) provide both SO2 and particulate matter removal; (3) and (4) provide simultaneous SO2 and NOx control. Of the four systems, only spray drying has been commercialized; E-beam irradiation has not been tested beyond pilot scale. Including four new utility systems sold since the last status report (Fall 1981) brings the total capacity served by dry flue gas desulfurization (FGD) to about 6200 MWe.
