Abstract | The predominant source of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and hydrocarbon (HC) from mobile combustion sources is the exhaust gas from gasoline-fueled engines. The principal mobile sources that generate CO, NOx, and HC emissions are described individually. Various techniques to control such emissions from these sources are reviewed. Technical considerations of the more prominent and feasible design modifications, alternative power sources, fuel modifications, auxiliary devices, and alternative transportation modes are presented. Sections on source evaluation, equipment costs, cost effectiveness analysis, and current research and development also are included. Pertinent references are presented at the end of each section.
