Abstract
This manual describes chronic toxicity tests for use in the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permits Program to identify effluents and receiving waters containing toxic materials in chronically toxic concentrations. With the exception of the Red Macroalga, Champia parvula, Reproduction Test Method 1009.0, the methods included in this manual are referenced in Table IA, 40 CFR Part 136 regulations and, therefore, constitute approved methods for chronic toxicity tests. They are also suitable for determining the toxicity of specific compounds contained in discharges. The tests may be conducted in a central laboratory or on-site, by the regulatory agency or the permittee. The Red Macroalga, Champia parvula, Reproduction Test Method 1009.0 is not listed at 40 CFR Part 136 for nationwide use.

Contents Notes
This manual describes six short-term (one-hour to nine-day) methods for estimating the chronic toxicity of effluents and receiving waters to five species: the sheepshead ninnow, Cyprinodon variegatus; the inland siverside, Menidia beryllina; the mysid, Mysidopsis bahia; the sea urchin, Arbacia punctulata; and the red, macroalga, Champia parvula. Also included are guidelines on laboratory safety, quality assurance, facilities and equipment, dilution water, effluent sampling and holding, data analysis, report preparation, and organism culturing and handling. Listing of computer programs for Dunnett's Procedure and Probit Analysis are provided in the Appendix.
