| Abstract |
The A. L. Taylor site, also known as 'Valley of the Drums', is located in a small valley in northern Bullett County outside of Brooks, Kentucky. This site was first identified as a waste disposal site by the Kentucky Department of National Resources and Environmental Protection (KDNREP) in 1967. Pits were excavated and the contents of drums were emptied into them. Soil from nearby hillsides was eventually used to cover the pits. Thousands of drums were also stored on the surface. There remains an unknown amount of waste buried onsite. The hazardous substances include approximately 140 compounds of the following classes: heavy metals, ketones, phthalates, polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs, chlorinated alkanes and alkanes, aromatics, chlorinated aromatics, and polynuclear aromitics (PAHs). The remedial action includes removal of pond water, securing pond sediments, installing a final cap cover for containment of the waste materials, constructing a surface water drainage diversion to re-route surface water and a monitoring program. The capital cost is estimated to be $795,349. |
