Abstract
Adsorption isotherms and bench scale column studies were used to compare the performance of five types of commercially available activated carbon and four types of resin for the removal of humic acids, fulvic acids, 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), and chloroform from water. For the adsorption of humic materials, some of the activated carbons and the weak base phenol formaldehyde resins performed satisfactorily. The same activated carbons provided satisfactory removal of MIB although the capacity was reduced somewhat in the presence of humic acid. The carbonaceous resin and one of the activated carbons had about the same capacity for chloroform removal at concentrations under 0.5 mg/l. The presence of 10 mg/l of humic acid had little effect on their capacity for adsorbing chloroform.
