Abstract
A bioassay was developed for testing the solid phase of dredged material that measures the survival of organisms, and the bioaccumulation of toxic substances. This bioassay is intended to estimate the bioaccumulation potential from sediments that are not acutely toxic to test organisms, but are suspected of containing persistent contaminants. Two species of fish, Pimephales promelas and Perca flavescens, and two invertebrate species, Octalasion tyrtaeum and Corbicula fluminea were used in the evaluation of this flow-through bioassay. Although not intended as a toxicity test per se, the test enables interpretation of any mortality that may occur during bioassays.
