Abstract
The Middle Atlantic Regional Office was notified on Thursday, January 18, of an oil spill of unknown origin on the Anacostia River near the 11th Street Bridge in Washington, D.C., Oil was found scattered in numerous small slicks varying from 20 to 300 square feet in area, for a distance of approximately 3,500 feet upstream. Of immediate concern was the possible damage to the paint of watercraft moored at the marinas and the possibility of scattering the oil along other shorelines or into the Potomac River. It was decided to remove the oil. The method selected was to use a boom to contain the oil and straw to remove it from the water. The source of the oil has not been identified at this time.
