Abstract
The vacuum assisted sludge dewatering bed (VASDB) process is a U.S. technology developed in the mid-1970s as an alternative to the more conventional sludge drying bed process. At the present time three manufacturers are marketing VASDB systems. Although the application of the technology has been increasing since the mid-1970s, operational system design, performance and cost information has not been amassed, analyzed and interpreted. During the course of the investigation, twelve operational VASDB systems were visited. Data and information from these twelve sites, as well as from other sources, were analyzed with the goal of identifying design and operational considerations which might be expected to yield supplemental cost-effectiveness, flexibility and reliability to the VASDB process.
