Abstract
A workshop on 'Issues Associated with Dermal Exposure and Uptake' was held to provide a forum for discussion of generic technical issues raised during the February 1998 peer review of the Superfund Dermal Guidance (SDG). The peer consultants who participated in the workshop focused on four key areas of concern: estimating dermal absorption from water, estimating dermal absorption from soil, the use of oral-dermal toxicity adjustment factors, and dermal risk characterization/uncertainty. In each of these areas, the consultants attempted to identify and categorize three kinds of issues: (1) those which should be addressed in the finalization of the current SDG, (2) those which should be given immediate attention by the agency before any future dermal guidance is prepared, and (3) those which should serve as the basis for an ongoing research program to improve the accuracy and breadth of applicability of dermal risk assessment methodologies. Overall, the peer consultants felt that the SDG document was generally well written and provided a reasonable and justifiable basis for conducting dermal risk assessments, given the current state of the art for the prediction of dermal absorption.
