Abstract
The report presents results of a study of the status of lime and limestone wet scrubbing systems for the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gases of fossil fuel-fired steam generators. The history of the systems, dating back 40 years, is reviewed. A general description of current lime and limestone wet scrubbing processes is given with a discussion of the similarities, advantages, and disadvantages of each process. Operating histories of several recent systems are presented noting the successes and problems of each unit. Solutions to problems of scrubber and pipe plugging, chemical scaling, corrosion and erosion, and demister and reheater operating problems are discussed.
