Abstract | Peroxychloroformyl nitrate, ClC(O)OONO2, has been identified as the principal product of the ultraviolet irradiation of Cl2, NO2, and CO mixtures in air. Fourier Transform IR spectroscopic detection methods have been used to identify the newly detected compound and to establish its decomposition kinetics. The compound is at least as stable thermally as peroxy acetyl nitrate. It seems possible that peroxychloroformyl nitrate may have a role in stratospheric chemistry. |
