Comprehensive Environmental Response, Comensation and Liability Information System (CERCLIS) contains data on potentially hazardous waste sites that have been reported to the Environmental Protection Agency by States, Municipalities, Private companies and private persons, pursuant to Section 103 of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). CERCLIS contains sites which are either proposed to or on the National Priorities List (NPL) and sites which are in the screening and assessment phase for possible inclusion on the NPL. As of February 1995, CERCLIS sites designated 'No Further Remedial Action Planned' (NFRAP) have been removed from CERCLIS and moved to the CERLIS Archive file. NFRAP sites may be sites where, following an initial investigation, no contamination was found, contamination was removed quickly without need for the site to be placed on the NPL, or the contamination was not serious enough to require Federal Superfund action or NPL consideration. EPA has removed approximately 25,000 NFRAP sites to lift the unintended barriers to the redevelopment of these properities and has archived them as historical records so EPA does not needlessly repeat the invstigations in the future. This policy change is part of EPA's Brownfields Redevelopment Program. It is important to note the sites on CERCLIS and the CERCLIS Archive files will change as the sites are being investogated or if new information becomes available. Both the CERCLIS and CERCLIS Archive Extracts files contain the following six (6) record types: 1) site, 2) operable units, 3) events, 4) aliases and alias location, 5) financial, and 6) enforcement activities. There are up to 62 fields of site information including: name and alias names, address, location, indicators for National Priority Status and Federal Facility, operable units for large sites, history of all pre-remedial, remedial, removal and community relations activities or events that have taken place or are ongoing at the site, financial funding information for events, and unresitrcted enforcement activities.
