Data were collected from the dairy industry and from technical literature to: - Identify the significant waste parameters. - Define standard manufacturing processes in the industry. - Establish standard raw waste loads for each standard manufacturing process. - Select levels of waste reduction that can be regarded as "base level of treatment" (BLT) and "best available treatment" (BAT). A total of 62 standard manufacturing processes were defined. Standard BOD loads were established for 24 of these. Standard waste water volumes were established on a complete plant basis. The data on other waste parameters including pH, temperature, suspended solids, and inorganic compounds were largely inclusive. Treatment in municipal facilities is generally more satisfactory and economical than separate treatment of dairy wastes.
