Abstract
Four teratogens, with different modes of action and pharmacological properties, were selected and investigated in the embryo culture system. The compounds included hydroxyurea (HU), cadmium (Cd), diphenylhydantoin (DPH), and cyclophosphamide (CPP). The overall goal of the study was to characterize the response of early stage (2-6 somites) mouse and rat embryos to these agents in an effort to test the potential of utilizing the system of whole embryo culture for basic teratological and toxicological investigations and as a screening technique for teratogens. The paper summarizes the results of studies with these 4 compounds.
