Abstract
The impact of global change on agriculture has been studied extensively for various crops at many different scales. However, relatively few studies have focused on rice, the most important staple food crop in Asia, where the already large population of rice consumers is rapidly increasing. In 1989 the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Environmental Research Laboratory, in Corvallis, Oregon, and the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines initiated a major research project to investigate relationships between climate change and rice production.
