Abstract
This report presents the findings of a study of the farm-raised catfish, crab, shrimp, and tuna processing segments of the canned and preserved seafood processing industry for the purpose of developing effluent limitations guidelines for point source and new source standards of performance for new sources in order to implement sections 304, 306, and 307 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (the Act). The seafood processing plants included in this study were those processing farm-raised catfish, crab, shrimp and tuna. Other aquatic and marine species are the subject of a separate study, which is to be published at a later date. Effluent limitations guidelines are set forth for the degree of effluent reduction attainable through the application of the 'Best Practicable Control Technology Currently Available' and the 'Best Available Technology Economically Achievable' which must be achieved by existing point sources by July 1, 1977 and July 1, 1983, respectively. Supportative data and rationale for development of the effluent limitations guidelines and standards of performance are contained in this report. Process, control techniques, costs, and wastes are discussed.
