Abstract
A study is presented of farmers' reasons for using pesticides, their knowledge of alternate crop protection methods, and their sources of information on both chemical and nonchemical crop protection methods. The corn/soybean production system in Iowa and Illinois was selected because corn and soybeans are the two leading U.S. crops in terms of farm value, use of chemical pesticides on them is heavy and increasing, and Iowa and Illinois are the two leading states in the production of corn and soybeans.
