Abstract
A Heathkit model GD-29 microwave oven was purchased and assembled in accordance with the manual supplied with the kit. As construction progressed, problem areas were observed and recorded. Most assembly problems were of a mechanical nature. After the oven was assembled, microwave leakage was observed to be less than 1 mW/sq cm. The possibility of hazards caused by errors in construction and wiring were investigated in the areas of door construction, interlock adjustments, and interlock wiring. The Heath microwave oven which was assembled will not comply with the performance standard for microwave ovens which will become effective October 6, 1971, primarily because objects can be inserted through the open screen in the door and the resulting leakage is in excess of 5 mW/sq cm. A list of recommended modifications is presented. (Author)
