Abstract
The primary current source of information on consumption rates of foods is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDAs) Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII). The purpose of the CSFII is to assess food consumption behavior and nutritional content of diets for policy implications relating to food production and marketing, food safety, food assistance, and nutrition education (USDA, 1995). Data from the 1989-1991 CSFII were analyzed previously to generate per capita intake rates for various food items and food groups for use in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys 1997 Exposure Factors Handbook. The Science Advisory Board reviewed the Exposure Factors Handbook in December 1996, prior to its release, and recommended that the food consumption data from USDAs most recent national survey be analyzed for an update to the handbook. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to analyze the CSFII 1994-1996 data for food consumption.
