Abstract
In response to an increased interest in water quality by the public, a large effort has been mounted to develop mathematical models for predicting heat assimilation in bodies of water. The accuracy of these models has recently come under scrutiny due to the need for temperature predictions within 1C of the ambient. This work is an evaluation of existing, one-dimensional stream temperature prediction techniques for accuracy and precision. The approach is through error estimates on a general model that encompasses all of the models presently used. A sensitivity analysis of this general model is used in conjunction with statistical methods to determine the solution errors.
