Abstract
The report documents some initial experiments in this country on the high-pressure compaction of municipally collected solid wastes. The application of high-pressure compaction has been examined experimentally and theoretically in quite some detail and appears to be a process which can be applied on a production scale with many attendant advantages. It has been demonstrated that stable bales can be produced by the high-pressure (2000 to 3500 psi applied pressure) compaction of loose and sacked household refuse; and that these bales can successfully survive the handling and shocks associated with comparatively long (up to 700 miles) rail-haul trips.
