Abstract
It has recently come to our attention that certain of our products, for which the processing includes an ethoxylation step, contain significant amount of 1, 4-dioxane as determined by GLC. Since 1, 4-dioxane has been reported in an NCI study to carcinogenic when administered to rats via drinking water we are reporting our findings under the provisions of TSCA. Although the analysis must be confirmed by mass spec., the probability of the presence of 1, 4-dioxane is sufficiently high to merit this notification. The compounds listed in Table 1 are used in the formulation of detergents, shampoos, textile auxiliaries and similar products, and the concentrations of 1, 4-dioxane in the final formulated product are, in our belief, at such a low level as not to pose a substantial risk for persons exposed to the dilute formulated products. However, at the production step following ethoxylation, there is the possibility of dermal and inhalation exposure to the undiluted materials containing, 1, 4-dioxane, thus giving rise to a potential risk to the workers involved.
