Abstract
The current status of the incineration art and the associated costs are presented. Principal emphasis is placed upon sludge thickening, sludge conditioning, sludge dewatering, sludge incineration systems, and the design and operation of incinerators. The attitudes of state agencies and consulting engineering firms towards the design and operation of incinerators is included. Conclusions reached are: (1) on-site disposal in limited space requires developments far more efficient in disposing of solids; (2) much improvement in pretreatment steps is essential; (3) addition of other combustible materials may enhance the efficiency of combustion of sludge; and (4) although several systems are currently available there is great need for investigation and updating of the process methods.
