Abstract
The Buffalo River was the subject of a comprehensive evaluation of waste loadings and water quality, performed as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's commitments to abate and control water pollution under the 1972 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the U.S. and Canada. The Buffalo River, as a result of adverse hydraulic conditions and high waste loadings from industrial discharges and from combined sewer overflows, exhibits a summertime dissolved oxygen concentration of less than one mg/l, a contravention of standards for iron, and evidence of poor water quality in most of the other 24 parameters studied.
