Abstract
The report examines the inherent optical characteristics and corresponding inherent visual effects of thin films of oil on water. The objective of the laboratory study is to determine the feasibility of visual means of oil spill detection. Factors considered include nature of illumination, sky conditions, sun angle, color and depth of water, color of bottom, and viewing angle.
