Abstract
During studies on the presence of coliform bacteria in a marina used by pleasure watercraft in northern Lake Michigan, it was determined that there were more coliform organisms present in the water than could be accounted for by the presence of the watercraft. This resulted in a study to determine the source of these organisms. Samples of water were collected from thirteen rivers and creeks draining the 12-mile beach study area. In general, those streams draining remote areas contained more coliform bacteria than streams draining populated areas; however the true source was not established.
