Abstract
The report discusses advantages of preheating coal before charging it into coke ovens, as an introduction to the use of charging systems that do not use larry cars. Two larry-car-free systems are discussed. A third system, which uses a larry car for charging preheated coal, is also discussed to provide more complete coverage of the charging of preheated coal. The two larry-car-free charging systems offer good possibilities for eliminating emissions generated during the usual method of charging coke ovens with larry cars. (The report responds to Item AM-2-2 of the Protocol of the First Working Meeting of the USA/USSR Task Force on Abatement of Air Pollution from the Iron and Steel Industry.)
