Abstract | Available methods which can be used to control the emission of organic vapors from surface coating operations are described. The methods consist of two types: (1) add-on control equipment, and (2) process and material changes. Available add-on equipment includes direct-flame incinerators, catalytic incinerators, and activated carbon adsorbers. Process and material changes which reduce or eliminate the use of organic solvents include (a) water-borne coatings, (b) high solids coatings, (c) powder coatings, (d) hot melt formulations, (e) electrostatic spraying, (f) electron beam curing, (g) ultraviolet curing. Graphs are given to determine the cost of incinerators at varying volumes and variation in inlet temperature, vapor concentration, degree of heat recovery, fuel costs, and hours of operation. Graphs are given to determine the cost of carbon adsorbers under varying volumes and vapor concentration. The available methods of measuring volatile organic emissions are discussed. |
